Wow! What makes this makeover of a secluded section of the city very impressive is that, it was done at a time when the country is unable to come up with $33 million to make a minimum interest payment on its $84 Billion debt. I gotta say, it takes a lot of courage to build a playground for the few privileged elite while the whole country is experiencing hyper-inflation, recession, currency depreciation, civil wars on multiple fronts....etc. It takes courage to be selfish.

How are the people in Korah doing?

Fiyameta,

In a few days Abiy is going to sign a 7 billion loan for the Bank & IMF. I have no problem with your response. Loan has good sides and bad sides. All I have been telling you is that what you see is what is happening and what going to happen. You have every right to deny what you see.

I totally believe you. Heavily indebted poor countries that take out huge IMF and World Bank loans they cannot afford to pay back end up surrendering their sovereignty, and willfully making themselves client states of the debtor countries whose interest they serve at their own peril. Debt is the new form of modern slavery. ዶሮን ሲያታልሏት ውሀው የሚሞቀው ለገላሽ ነው አሏት!

According to Wikileaks, when Meles Zenawi received his orders to invade Somalia, the first words to come out of his mouth was.... "the order is a godsent." He sacrificed 40,000 Ethiopians during his invasion of Somalia. PM Abiy also said he would die fighting for his masters. That means he won't have a problem losing 7 million Ethiopian lives if the terms and conditions of the loan calls for it.

It's unfortunate that, Ethiopia never had leaders willing to make sacrifices for their own people and nation. But had several leaders that shackled the people to foreign debt. because placing a slave in charge of a plantation only exacerbates the effects of slavery, and in this case, Debt bondage. :|

The Greater Addis Area is @7.5 million, at least.
Excluding metropolitan Nazareth but including Dere Zeit, Townships like Kotebe, Sululeta, Sebetha, Akakl, fast growing Lebu, Lege Tafo etc.
Ethiopia is @ 120 million but with little development outside Addis. Means a huge migration to the Center. Addis will grow to 15 million in 2 decades.

With an incompetent governments with a very poor city planning and infrastructure, the future doesn’t look so good to be a world class city.

One would think city planners will take the initiative and start a new adjacent city development with new infrastructures including a sewer system. Instead they are doubling down erecting tall buildings in the old city without running water and functioning washrooms.

What is also sad is that fast growing and much promising cities like Awassa, Bahir Dar, Nazareth are managed poorly without standard city planning.

STANDARD, an equalizer would have solved all this issues but that demands competence. Most African cities lack this minor and important tool of city development.

Ethiopia is lucky in having a big population and potential cites and towns across the country: Gonder, Jimma , Mekele, Dessie, Debre Berhan, Debre Markos, Buta Jera, Kombolcha, Dire Dawa etc.
but it has to be developed through standards. Tall buildings and bright lights and water fountains are nothing but a disaster, superficial makeup without a proper planning.
