Remember that Eritreans vehemently opposed TPLF's desire to secede Tigray from Ethiopia. EPLF's rationale for the principled stand was outlined in a classic paper published in 1985 in its official organ "Adulis". Eritreans do not have the evil intention of wrecking nations for expediency as our neighbours to the south. Isn't it evil for Abiy to wish Somaliland's independence while vehemently opposing Tigray's bid to be a nation? It is only the unprincipled who behave just to ensure their own interests without any consideration for the interests of others. Ask yourself, why does the whole world oppose the independence of Somaliland? And then perhaps you will grasp that Eritreans are just doing what the world is doing. If we were to be led by expediency, we would have supported Ethiopia's desire to acquire a sea foothold by supporting the MoU because that would certainly reduce Ethiopia's craving for Eritrea's Red Sea. But we don't operate that way. We know that in the long run, such cavalier attitude to sovereignty leads to more serious problems. People who are led by their cravings instead of principles are very dangerous!

Fair enough. But, tigray has always been part of Ethiopia like oromia and amara states, even during the brief occupation by Italy. While Somaliland was once British Somaliland and voluntarily joined Italian Somaliland to make one country. Fast forward to the reign of siad Barre, whose army committed atrocities in the North, to the point that the dominant clan the Isaac made the SNM movement and fought his regime. Initially they weren't separatists but they eventually became that. Despite their flaws, they've been running a peaceful nation in the North while the south has yet to establish an efficient government.
While they've yet to have a referendum in Somaliland, do they not deserve self determination, whether that entails full independence or autonomy?
Eritreans case was strong for many reasons, such as having clearly demarcated borders dating back to colonial times, and the fact that the midget emperor illegally abolished the federation, along with the fact that the eritreans overwhelmingly wanted to be their own state. Somailand qualifies to be treated the same way or sense. However, I do agree that Ethiopias govt may have bad intentions or does gave bad intentions. If your arguments based on that, fair enough, but the people of Somaliland deserve to be able to determine their fate. A fair and free referendum there could certainly solve this issue once and for all.

I have always opposed land locking of Ethiopia( you may remember my campaign # Abiy Bring Back Our Access to Red Sea! ) but I supported the independence of Eritrea at that time to stop the blood shed on both sides for three decades. Currently I feel ascaris do not deserve to be independent and my position is they have to reintegrated with Tigray to the pre- Italy structure.

Ascari oppose the independence of Somaliland for a selfish reason to prevent Ethiopia getting access to the Red Sea!
