Whether Chenawit was buried at the bottom of Dedebit Mountain, under Menilik's feet, or on top of him has no significance. A person is judged by their deeds in life, not by the shell of their body left to decay. However, the image of a white girl on Emperor Menilik's lap, posted in La Ria, marked a historical moment where the nightmare of white supremacy was shattered by the victory of the "inferior Black race" against the "superior white race" army of Italy at Adwa. In an era where even looking at a white lady could result in lynching, seeing a white lady enjoying herself on the lap of "the monkey," Menilik, was a seismic event. It was a momentous achievement for Menilik, who led the Ethiopian people, who spoke different languages and practiced different religions, to this historic victory. This accomplishment ensures Menilik's name will be remembered for generations to come, towering above his grave.
On the other hand, Chenawit has only brought enmity among ourselves, a division that will likely endure for a long time. Both leaders may have passed, but one is remembered with reverence, while the other's name has rotted away alongside his body. That is the stark difference between the two.
