“Ascari” is not a word that I use. As a matter of fact, I remember reacting to its use a long time ago in this forum or another arguing that it was victimizing the victims.
I have heard its Amharic version, አሽከር, which is probably borrowed and used to subconsciously victimize the victims.
The Ethiopian class is selective of words that it used. ገርጋራ and ኣጋዥ are two examples.
If I am not mistaken, the origin of the word Ascari is the old Roman Empire or its descendant.
Here is its definition that I read online: native serving in a colonial African military or police force.
I also read that the Italian version is derived from the Germanic name Ansgar. I will leave to trained Anthropologists if Ansgar has anything to do with ገርጋራ by any stretch of the imagination.
The first FACT I wish to establish here for the purpose of this commentary is that the origin of the word Ascari is the old Roman Empire or its descendant more than any entity else.
Ethiopia’s ንጉሠ ነገስት ምኒልክ led the battle of Adwa in 1896 and was victorious, if not wholly, in stopping a descendant of the old Roman Empire that crossed the seas to colonize Ethiopia.
Within about seven short years, the Wright Brothers got off the ground and took to the skies a noble flying machine in the United States of America, based on Da Vinci’s flying machine concept after the European Renaissance out of the old Roman Empire.
I have no reason to imagine that Da Vinci’s imagination of the flying machine wasn’t noble. The invention of the flying machine appeared noble until it started to rain poisonous chemicals from the sky and fall out of the sky with sensory beings aboard.
Catholicism was established in the old Roman Empire and maintains continuity to this day in Vatican City.
It is also a FACT that Protestantism is a Protestant child of Catholicism of the old Roman Empire.
Presumably within a short period of time after Ethiopia’s victory at Adwa, some people managed to find a way to a western corner of Ethiopia to anoint twelve peasants as newly minted Pastors to adhere to a Protestant Child of Catholicism of the old Roman Empire.
It is now at least three generations and counting since that induction of adherence was accepted in western corner of Ethiopia.
To call those newly minted Ethiopian peasants the newly hired Ethiopian Ascaris on the morrow of the battle of Adwa would be victimizing the victims.
Whether those who anointed them were mutually conscious about taking the flying machine to the sky in the USA and about a machination to praying to the sky is not clear to me.
However, this doesn’t need a reincarnation of Sigmund Freud to present a forensic study of history from more than three millennia ago. It should be a lot easier to present a forensic history of Protestantism in Ethiopia since the battle of Adwa.
Praying to ዋቀ is literally praying to the sky. This is exactly why a clarion call to make a distinction between praying to God/Gofta and praying to ዋቀ was made a long while ago.
The crucial point here is whether there existed a mutual knowledge about taking off a flying machinery to the sky in one place and about a machination to pray to the sky in another place on the morrow of the victory of ንጉሠ ነገስት ምኒልክ at Adwa.
If so, this must be a definition of unfathomable evil. Unfathomable because he only stood for the freedom of his country and people against those that crossed the seas to colonize.
More than a century later, there are Ethiopians none other than the descendants of those who accepted adherence to a Protestant child of Catholicism of the old Roman Empire on the morrow of Adwa that have the audacity to keep blaming those who stood with ንጉሠ ነገስት ምኒልክ for that battle.
Admittedly, I am one of those who have expressed criticism of him about Ethiopia’s internal political affairs even though I never wavered from singing about Adwa. The more I learn about it, the more I understand that my criticism of him was superficial.
History is yet to write whether Meles Zenawi of Adwa, who oversaw a provision for secession in the country’s constitution, is a causality of the absolutely childish blame of those who stood with ንጉሠ ነገስት ምኒልክ for that battle by descendants of the newly anointed peasants on the morrow of Adwa.
What is for sure is that it was a close observation of the superficial scourge to sway Ethiopia in the direction of the Protestant child of Catholicism of the old Roman Empire that spelled another clarion call with class for Ethiopia’s Renaissance.
In this clarion call is swaying away from another induction to adhere to the old Roman Empire.
I was in a shuttle bus going to work while reading a book written in Afan Oromo when I noticed that the Latin letter w looked almost like the Ethiopian letter ወ. That was only the beginning of many look alike letters in both alphabets.
On another occasion, reading the same book in the shuttle bus while going to work, an African American who was sitting next to me asked me in what language it was written. After answering, I faced a subsequent question to know which country had colonized it. The question hit me.
I remember starting a debate on a now discontinued forum about writing Afan Oromo in Ethiopian alphabet. Using it with ease on a personal level makes it even more evident.
The call for Ethiopia’s Renaissance has been repeated over and over in recent years. Yet, there appears to be a continuity of demented capacity to reflect and be advised about those who stood behind ንጉሠ ነገስት ምኒልክ for the battle of Adwa.
I am sure there are plenty of Ethiopians who have labored and continue to labor in good faith in order to make Ethiopia’s internal politics better. Only those with demented capacity continue with their childish blame of those who stood behind him in that battle.
