Lebanon style separation of powers needs to be tried in ethiopia, Amhara President, Oromo PM and Gurage speaker

Post by Dejach Aklilu » 13 Feb 2024, 18:37

We have tried every single system in ethiopia...from elitist monarchy to proletarian communism to ethnic bantustanism.. each system led to the elevation of few and disenchantment of the many, causing it to be a country at constant quarrel with itself, having a civil war once every 25 years.

Lebanon and northern Ireland are the only two countries in the world that recognise their population is made up of adversarial peoples that aren't going to kiss and make up anytime soon(just like us). Instead of changing regime after regime doing the same thing and expecting a different result, they came to a gentlemans agreement that power should be separated among the adversarial groups.

Ethiopia closer resembles Lebanon more than Northern Ireland since in Northern Ireland the quarrel is between descendants of settlers and descendants of natives while Lebanon's adversarial groups are all ancient communities in the same vein as Ethiopia's.

So similar but not the same to the national pact of Lebanon, in ethiopia the prime minister should be the executive of the government and reserved for the oromo. The president who is commander of the army reserved for amhara, speaker of Parliament should be reserved for either of the next five biggest ethnic groups (somali, tigre, sidama, gurage, wolayta) ... army cheif reserved for oromo while security chief reserved for amhara. Head of Central Bank and head of judiciary is reserved for neither amhara, nor oromo. You get the picture.

Once an agreement in the above vein is set, major constitutional changes can be vetoed by one branch of the government in the similar manner as in the good Friday agreement of Northern Ireland. I.e. the president and the speaker together can vetoe constitutional changes proposed by the PM with a 2 to 1 vote even if it has enough voted to pass parliament!!! Vice versa the pm and the speaker can compell the president to reverse an order to the army chief lawfully with a combined vetoe.

This type of government is akin to a forced marriage, the last resort alternative for coexistence. Since instituting this type of settlement civil war riddled Lebanon prospered economically, rebuilt itself until it was bankrupted recently by its central Bank policies. Northern Ireland also prospered economically and culturally until brexit threatended to reverse the gains they made but neither have resorted to thier old ways of civil war or periodic violence and terrorism. Its a pipe dream to imagine an ethiooia without political violence anytime soon but at least this might be the last hope to halt our advance to official failed statedom .

Gurage over Tigray and Somali how do Gurage deserve the speaker before Somali and Tigray , Since Somali region is bigger then all of the regions of Ethiopia only oromia is bigger and the Somalis are the 3rd largest ethnic group after Galla and Amhara.
I think it should be like this Amhara president Galla Prime Minister and Somali Speaker. That is fair

No thanks because your hope is hope against hopelessness. We need to stand on our own feet and walk the walk building democracy, equality and justice for all. Democracy, egalitarianism and equality is the invention of Ethiopians not the invention of Libanon, the birth place of the outlaw known as Eskunder N!gga. :P

I Horus a long time ago on this Forum stated that the only possible and functional political arrangement in Ethiopia for a long time to come will have to be ETHNIC BALANCE OF POWER! This seems to be what is suggested here.

As for those of anti-Gurage herds, here are the facts. Gurage is actually greater in population that Tigray. If you dispute it let us have an honest UN controlled population census.

In terms of national revenue, Gurage contributes anywhere between 27% to 30% the Ethiopian national revenue in business, income and property taxes.

Probably close to 50% of Ethiopian finance, trade and manufacturing is operated by Gurage.

Silence is not an evidence of absence.

If there are 10 top wealthiest people in Ethiopia, probably 4 would be Gurages.

In fact if Ethiopia was governed by Gurages for the last 30 years, we would have surpassed Egypt.

You can only marginalize the Gurage at the risk of your own impoverishment and perpetual self-destruction.

For a change , try to grasp the Gurage Ethos! It is the only way out of the Ethiopian cul de sac!
