I am not quite sure about this but a lot has been said about this and many politician criticized Minilik for selling Djibouti to France. They are saying Minilik leased Djibouti for 99 years. And one politician Also said that 99 years deal was ended in Ethiopia's former regime (Derg era). They continued saying that rather than askig the return of Djibouti to the motherland, Mengistu allowed referendum on Djibouti and the people of Djibouti chose its freedom.
If that is the case and it is true, we have a right to ask again Djibouti. What do you say?

A Historical Investigation of Ethiopia’s Claims over Djibouti
Using the British Foreign Office archival documents that have never been used by researchers so far in relations to Ethiopia’s claims over Djibouti, this study thoroughly examines the historical foundations of such claims. In addition to the classified diplomatic correspondence documents, attempts have been made to enrich the study with contemporary sources. According to the topsecret letter sent from the British Embassy in Addis Ababa to the Foreign Office in London in 1919, France had signed a secret agreement with Ethiopia pledging that it would hand over the former French Somaliland (now the Republic of Djibouti) to the Ethiopian government when requested by the latter. In violation of the agreement, the French government announced that the people of the territory would decide their future in a referendum in 1867. Soon afterwards, the Ethiopian government claimed that Djibouti was one of Ethiopia’s lost provinces. To the delight of the French government, the people voted for continued association with France. Despite Ethiopia’s historical rights, the new military government of Ethiopia officially declared in 1975 that it had no claims over Djibouti. In a second referendum held in 1977, the people of Djibouti voted for independence. This qualitative study thus analyzes Ethiopian’s claims over Djibouti in historical perspective.

It is true that in 1894, ጥቁር ሰው Emperor Menelik signed an agreement with the French colonial power to lease the territory called Djibouti to France for 99 years. However, 16 years before the lease was to expire in 1993, France broke the lease agreement and allowed Djibouti to declare its independence from Ethiopia in 1977.Abaymado wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 01:36I am not quite sure about this but a lot has been said about this and many politician criticized Minilik for selling Djibouti to France. The Derg Ethiopian regime was so afraid of France's military power that it didn't raise any objections to France breaking the lease agreement, or Djibouti declaring its independence from Ethiopia, instead the Derg blessed Djibouti's independence in front of the world at the UN, when Ethiopia's ambassador to the United Nations said the following words:
If I may borrow Getachew Reda's famous words: "This is a sick joke!""...we respect this hard-won independence, and hope that others also will join Ethiopia in this commitment to respect and honor the independence and territorial integrity of the new state...."
Fast forward to 2024, and guess which country has refused to "respect and honor the independence and territorial integrity of" Somalia?
