Impartial professional analysis.

Why is it taking so long for Abbiy to recognize Somali Land ? He put the cart before the horse.
Actually, the African Union was sympathetic to Somali Land. Not anymore. The right steps would have been recognize then sign the deal. The idea of Ethiopian Navy is dead on arrival.Ethiopia may recognize Somali Land. No other country will follow the suit. Somali Landers will be fed up with their own government. Anyhow, why is it taking Abbiy to recognize Somali Land this long ?

The deal will go through but slowly - it will go through because both sides want it so badly. Abiy wants to port in that his survival is hanging on a thin thread and he wants something to show, particularly the navy. Somaliland is at the cusp of breaking the barrier to nationhood. But both parties are doing it at extremely huge risk and cost - Ethiopia at the cost of massive diplomatic isolation and Somaliland at the cost of compromising its sovereignty to some degree - a a foreign army on its soil. But, in this time age there is no free lunch. The petty tribalist cheap talk about sovereignty is just that cheap talk. Somalilanders need to open up their shop for business and do something with their national asset. For that, Ethiopia alone is a massive market and business opportunity for both. Somalilanders can make enough money only by selling fish to Ethiopians. So the deal is complex and it is a good thing that it happens slowly.

Poor Abbiy,

The Super Powers are screaming in his ears quietly. He is feverishly looking for partners to recognize Somali Land. The f…ucker should not have disclosed the deal. Now it is in the open. What really makes the Somalis suspicious is the rag tag Ethiopian Navy that is supposed to stand with the Super Powers anchored in tiny Djibouti.
