President Joe Biden announced today that Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice will be stepping down from her position. In a statement, the President praised Rice’s accomplishments during her more than two years of service, highlighting her essential role in advancing various policy initiatives.
Many were initially surprised by Rice’s appointment due to her extensive foreign policy background as a former National Security Advisor and UN Ambassador. However, her tenure as Domestic Policy Advisor has proven her determination and capability in getting important work done for the American people, Biden said.
He added that under Rice’s leadership, the administration expanded and strengthened the Affordable Care Act, developed a comprehensive national mental health strategy, and enabled Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for seniors while capping the cost of insulin at $35. Additionally, the administration has taken historic actions to reduce gun violence, advance police reform, address marijuana policy, and embed equity into the work of the entire federal government.
Rice has also played a vital role in making college more affordable, providing student debt relief, increasing access to high-quality childcare and long-term care, and committing to a bold national strategy to end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases by 2030. Furthermore, her efforts have contributed to reversing harmful immigration policies from the previous administration, reunifying more than 670 children separated from their families, and rebuilding the broken system of care for unaccompanied children, Biden said.
President Biden commended Rice’s unique public service record as the only person to serve as both National Security Advisor and Domestic Policy Advisor. He emphasized her dedication to action, results, integrity, humility, and humor in her work. The President expressed his gratitude for Rice’s service, counsel, and friendship and thanked her family for sharing her with the nation.
