The main reason that Singapore leapt from the Third World to the First World status within one generation was because its leaders gave priority to human development, and recorded the highest literacy rate in the world. He made a good point, but to be clear, Ethiopia has been the West's client state and ''enforcer'' in the Horn of Africa before the TPLF.
Hence why it allocated so much funds and arms to whoever ruled Ethiopia, to secure their interests and keep their puppet, or client, in power.
It was the Soviets for Mengistu, and the West for Haile Selassie and Menelik too.

If it tries to not be their client, of course, they will work to destabilize it and keep it [Ethiopia] in perpetual conflict from within, and that is of course, beyond sad and demoralizing.
