Blaming Gurages for their poverty is adding insult to their poverty!
Poverty is not a personal choice, neither is it the result of laziness, immorality, and/or irresponsibility, but a reflection of society's structure.
The biggest reason for poverty of a certain group within a certain society is mainly how the society itself is structured, and Gurages are not an exception, I'm afraid. Without structural changes, it may be very difficult, if not impossible, to eliminate disparities and poverty within any society. Poverty and other social miseries are in large part due to social structure, which is how society functions at a macro level.
Poverty is not a state of mind.
We all hear well-off people claiming that all poor people need to do is to make better choices and if the poor people did this and that, they wouldn't be poor. This is a simplistic view towards complex social phenomenon that minimises the impact of a societal issue caused by structure.
In 2017, Ben Carson, the then Housing Secretary in the US, called poverty a state of mind, referring to the 43.96 million Americans that were living in poverty, while cutting his budget to help low-income households by more than US$6 billion the following year!
