February to March rains in Northern part of Ethiopia, specially in Tigray. Farmers and other displaced person have been plowing the fields to cover them with seed. The harvesting time is May/June. From June/July the lands are plowed again for the rainy season which will be harvested from December/January. This is the cycle of farming in Tigray. Tigray is under siege, but should be able to get adequate food supply from the fields. Tigray has enough cattle and should be able to get milk and chesse from the cows, meat from cheep/goat, eggs and meat from chickens/hens. Still it will be hard to live under siege, but Tigray will survive.
We hope the government is co-coordinating farming activities under siege. Otherwise local community groups should be able to cary on farming activities as in the last 3000 years.
"Ethiopia, broadly speaking has three seasons. The short rains season, known as the Belg, runs from February to May. This is then followed by the long rains season, known as the Kiremt, which is between June and mid September. The Bega, typically occurs between October and January, and is characterised by generally dry weather over the bulk of the country, with wet weather and a secondary peak in rainfall over the south.
Across southern and eastern parts of the country there is an increase in the probability of above-average rainfall during the Belg rains. "
