The Italians occupied Irafile, on April 10, 1885. Irafaile means ''elephant pasture" in the Saho language, and this signifies the wildlife that abounded in this area before the twentieth century. Pic Credit @GhideonMusa

On April 12 1885, Italy occupied Hirghigo, a town near Massawa, Eritrea. It was founded in the 15th century by BELEW immigrants whose leading family formed the dynasty of the NA'IBs, Turkish appointed rulers. It became the seaward terminus of the Eritrean caravan trade.

Hirghigo was ransacked by Dej. Wube of Ethiopia in 1843/44 & the Egyptians burned it in 1847 & seized & fortified it in 1865. Hirghigo, located at a foot of mountains, supplied Massawa with most of its drinking water. Due to its fresher climate many merchants settled there.
