In December 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 21 as the #WorldDownSyndromeDay to celebrate the most affectionate, kind, and joyful human beings.

Eritrea is making great efforts to include children with disabilities in its schools, providing training to teachers and equipping classrooms with appropriate materials.

In principle and in practice, the GoSE dearly treasures the rights, welfare and best interests of the child as its cornerstone in the building of a developed nation in which all Eritrean people enjoy peace, prosperity and social justice.

The GoSE hasn't spared any effort & resource within its power in the promotion of the Rights & Welfare of the Child & reaffirms its devotion to the furtherance & guarantee of the rights & welfare stipulated in ACRWC & other international & regional conventions it is a party.

Despite the immense challenges it faces, Eritrea continues to make significant strides in all areas that are pertinent to the implementation of the ACRWC and CRC.

Life expectancy at birth in Eritrea rose from 48 years in 1990 to 67 years in 2018. The number of schools rose from 132 in 1991 to 1987 in 2017 of which 80% were in rural areas.

The availability of health care facilities within a radius of 10 km increased from 46% in 1991 to 80% in 2019.

Access to electric power supply stands at 43.5% and road transport service covers 85% of villages.

Biniam Berhe

Ms. Luul Gebreab, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, delivered Eritrea's periodic report on the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child covering the period from 2014-2019.

AVIATION COLLEGE, ERITREAN AIR FORCE, ERITREAN PILOTS,
A Conversation with a Female Eritrean Air Force Pilot, Hana Kidane
TesfaNews
March 23, 2022

“I believe the Aviation College is very crucial for the future of the Eritrean Air force” – 2nd Lieut. Hana Kidane

BY SABRINA SOLOMON | SHABAIT

Throughout history, Eritrean women have been icons of determination and diligence. From household chores to jobs that highly-skilled people, they have demonstrated their unshakable work spirit.

Meet Second Lieutenant Hana Kidane, a 23-year-old Eritrean who has recently graduated from the College of Aviation of Eritrea as a pilot. She has shared her experiences with us in the following interview.

Q : Thank you for your time, Hana. Please introduce yourself.

Thank you for having me. I’m a 2022 graduate of the College of Aviation of Eritrea. I was born in 1998 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and came to Eritrea in 1999. I went to elementary and junior schools in Adi-Guaedad and did high school at the Barka Secondary School. Then I joined a technical school and went to Sawa in 2016. I joined the Eritrean Air Force in 2017, right after I got back from Sawa.

Q : What was your experience in college like?

It was amazing. It took us three years to complete the program — two years of theoretical and a year of practical training. The first two years were intense with a lot of exams. We couldn’t get much sleep. But we had a clear goal and we held on to that.

In the beginning, I thought it was going to be tough for us girls as it was intense; however, it never felt tough once we got into college. Our fellow boys kept encouraging us and supporting us throughout our college years.

Our department mates and instructors were also very supportive, which gave us hope and faith. Our instructors were everything that we could have asked for. They took care of us as brothers and sisters. Of course, we were willing and determined to reach our goals and were finally able to make it.

Q : What was your first time training to fly and your first solo flight like?

I don’t have sufficient words for that. It was all that I wished to experience while we were learning the theoretical part. Being able to maneuver an aircraft in the sky on your own gave me satisfaction and joy. My first solo flight was in Massawa where we flew 1200 feet high and remained airborne for 30 minutes. I was a bit nervous during the first practical training on the sky. I successfully completed my mission, and that was the happiest day of my college life.

Q : What do you think about people in our society who portray women as weak compared to their men counterparts when it comes to doing a job that requires high skills?

Such people should open their eyes and see it isn’t true. We are able to graduate just like our male counterparts. Around 15-20 females graduated with us in different fields. If a girl is willing to achieve anything, she can and there should be no doubt about that.

As females, we should never let things such as age affect our dream journey. Thinking about marriage and having children should never prevent us from having big dreams because it’s all about time management. Manage your time well and you’ll be able to go through the process of life on time. Don’t lose great education and job opportunities for things that you’ll be able to achieve sooner or later. Age shouldn’t be a factor to stop us from doing what we are supposed to do.

Q : Women in our country aren’t very well represented in the job market. What do you think is the problem and how should it be solved?

You are right. But it doesn’t mean that we females are weaker or slower. It’s all about willingness and taking initiative. We know our mothers and grandmothers fought along with their fellow brothers and fathers for their nation’s freedom. We have what it takes in our heads, so let’s just have a winning mindset. Everything is possible if we just believe that we can do it. Our country is providing us with opportunities that no one would get easier. Why shouldn’t we use it? The next aviation college students must walk through this journey with hope, diligence, and determination. And we should always remember that the people and the government are with us and supporting us.

Our mothers were able to leave their marks in our history, working with determination despite the colonization and pressure from society. With less pressure, there can’t be anything we can’t achieve now in the modern world. We just need to take one step at a time and strive to be where we want to be and who we want to be.

Q : Are there any other remarks you would like to make?

I advise young Eritrean girls to pursue their dreams despite pressures that might possibly come along their way. We are the products of our magnificent mothers and grandmothers, and so let’s all vow to keep up the hard-working  a spirit that we inherited.

This is just the beginning for those of us who have graduated. Students of the aviation college and also the youth everywhere must strive to do better every single day. We have now got our license as pilots and we’ll continue to get to the top and serve our nation and people.

Our aviation college’s first commencement was undeniably successful. I think the aviation college is very crucial for the future of the Eritrean Air force.

Thank you!

What's interesting about this particular air-force pilot is that she was deported from Ethiopia at the age of ONE along with her family and 100,000 other Eritreans by TPLF, the then gov't, now a criminal rebel group, fugitive from justice, hiding in ክልል Tigray.

As horrendous as it was for Eritreans, Agames did us a huge favor. These people deported some highly-skilled Eritreans back home. One of my own relative, who was a physician with many years experience, at Tikur Anbessa hospital (Addis Ababa), was deported with his wife, who happened to be another medical doctor in that same hospital..........But the biggest favor of all of these idiots was in widening the psychological boundary between us and them. That is more powerful than the physical barricade we would like to put up at our borders........

Here is another Eritrean gentleman whose career began before some of us even born, and who compiled the first Ethiopian anesthesiology curriculum and contributed a lot to that country. Yet the Adwa geniuses decided to deport him in 1998......And of course, the gentleman helped in setting up a new department and training the new generation Eritreans. Actually, to its credit, the Ethiopian government acknowledged the gentelman's contribution and awarded him a medal in 2018 after inviting him to Addis as their guest.

New student group celebrates Eritrean culture

The Eritrean Student Association aims to support students and community members from the East African country.

From left to right, EriSA Treasurer Selam Gerezgiher, President Jasmine Adam and Vice President Milena Yishak pose for a photo following ERISA’s first presentation for International Women’s Day at the Eritrean Community Center.

By Claire Nelson

https://mndaily.com/271607/news/new-stu ... n-culture/

March 24, 2022

A newly-revived student group launched this month seeks to represent Eritrean students at the University of Minnesota.

The Eritrean Student Association (EriSA) https://instagram.com/erisaumn?utm_medium=copy_link plans to host cultural events and launch initiatives to support the local Eritrean community.

As described by their webpage, the Eritrean Student Association (EriSA)
strives to embrace Eritrean heritage and culture in all its forms by creating an intellectual, cultural and social environment for students at the University of Minnesota.
Previous versions of EriSA have existed at the University in past years, but the group had periods of inactivity due to gaps in leadership.

Jasmine Adam is a second-year student majoring in urban studies and geographic information systems who serves as EriSA’s president. About the group’s history, Adam said,
They tried before, many times … in 2011, 2016, 2018.
This time, Adam said, she and the other founding members will ensure the group’s longevity by instituting systems for the transition of EriSA leadership.

Selam Gerezgiher is a first-year student who intends to major in cinema and media culture. She is a founder of the newly-revived group and serves as its treasurer. Gerezgiher’s sister served on the former EriSA group in 2016 and Gerezgiher said she was excited to re-establish it.
There’s a group for almost every single East African country,
she said.
I saw a lack of Eritrean representation. I just wanted to create a space for me and my Eritrean friends to have fun on campus and have our chance.
EriSA’s founders have planned several events for this year and next year. This April, they will host their first event titled “Meet the Culture.” At this event, they will introduce EriSA’s founding members, present on Eritrean culture and lead games and activities for attendees.
One of the things I’m most excited for is the shadowing opportunities that I’m hoping we can do next year,
Gerezgiher said.

EriSA founding members plan to connect Eritrean high school students with college students across the metro area and eventually offer tutoring services to Eritrean high schoolers and middle schoolers.
EriSA is a student group for Eritreans at all of the universities in the greater Twin cities, not just our University,
Gerezgiher said.

The founding members’ decision for EriSA to be open to Eritrean students outside of the University is representative of their connection to the local Eritrean community.
I feel like the Eritrean diaspora in Minneapolis and St. Paul is very connected as a whole,
Adams said.

Milena Yishak, a first-year student majoring in developmental psychology, serves as EriSA’s vice president and its third co-founder.

Yishak, Gerezgiher and Adam cited their deep roots in the Eritrean community as a central motivation for their launching this group.
Attending soccer club or just going to events in the community or celebrating Independence Day, that’s always been a prominent part of my life,
Yishak said.
So that definitely is the reason why I feel like I’m still in touch with my culture … That’s a driving force of why I wanted to start this group.
The three co-founders recently gave their first EriSA presentation at the Eritrean Community Center’s annual International Women’s Day celebration. There, they were met with a strong show of support from their community.

After the three founders introduced themselves and their roles on EriSA,
There was a roar, a whole round of applause,
Gerezgiher said.
The whole crowd was just cheering us on.
