Atse Yohannes and Ras Alula were Neftegnas. They won all their battles thanks to the British Arms they were granted. But they easily lost Eritrea to Italians.

It was not menelik of Shewa who lost Eritrea. It was Atse Yohannes and Ras Alula. They were defeated by Italians and pushed down to the Mereb and up to the battle of Adwa. The Italians Reached Alaje in 1896 and it was the Shewan Dynasty that made Tigray not fall to Italian Colonialism

In fact Atse Yohannes and Ras Alula only were able to subdue Eritrea because the British gave them thousands of riffles. They invaded Eritrea and then lost Eritrea.
