A presidential system changes the game and forces anyone who wants to lead a very diverse 120 million people to face all of them at the ballot box. This will force him to try and get all votes and not only from his narrow village. You want to lead 120 million? Then face the nation at the ballot box. No more backdoor party manoeuvring! This has the side effect of pulling our politicians and our politics to the balanced center from the narrow extremism poles.
If true, Dr. Abiy will secure his re-election and do a great service to the country at the same time
Arts TV claims PP's decision to move to presidential system. For a highly divided country with majority tribal parties like ours, a presidential system is not an option but a must. Anyone who wants to lead the country must face the whole public and be elected by all. Currently, it is enough for his tiny village to vote for him and he can become the prime minister of 120 million as long as he is good at manoeuvring through party politics inside his party. Abiy was directly elected only in his Beshasha/Jimma village and Ethiopians outside of Beshasha/Jimma could not vote for him. The same was with Meles. Meles too was only elected in Adwa and never faced Ethiopians directly at the ballot box.

Re: If true, Dr. Abiy will secure his re-election and does a great favor for the country at the same time
Even if it sounds like that, we shall see if it goes beyond being cosmetics. Unless the Ethnic regions and ethnic demagogues are dismantled, the presidential system would do little to nothing. That said, unless a quick political adjustment that addresses the resentment of the every increasing majority is made, a popular revolt (with grave consequences) would be guaranted in a forseable timeframe

I agrree on the fact that presidential system seems the only option to the healing direction. But there is still a catch. As long as the ethnic regions remains in place, talkatives like Abiy can say anything to get the votes of others and s/he will slide back to his/her ethnic enclave. Even at the current regional level, even if a non oromonis going to win a oromia region, the ethnic demagogues would not allow him/her to function. In my view, the current ills and problems will not be treated unless tribal regions are dismantled and trabial savages are removed from every hols of government positions. The voting system should not be limited to the head of state only.
BTW, if this is true, I foresee a good candidatw
