According to the BBC, police and Arba Minch University have arrested the man who stabbed and killed a second-year student at Arba Minch University Hotel and Tourism Management.

The university student and two other students were arraigned in Arba Minch court on Tuesday in connection with the rose murder and were given a 15-day remand in custody, Arba Minch University communications director Bedru Irigo told the BBC.

Arba Minch City Police Commander Adane Oke told the BBC that Tsigereda Girmay was killed in a stabbing attack near the library on Monday night.

The attack took place with a knife, and she was repeatedly stabbed in the chest and side, but was taken to Arba Minch General Hospital for treatment, but survived.

The killing took place around 5 pm on January 23, 2014. The suspect, who was stabbed to death, is a second-year student at the University’s Hotel and Tourism Management and is studying in the same department as Tsigereda, according to Bedru.

They allege that Tsigereda had previously had an affair with the suspect and that she had broken off the relationship, and that the suspect had stabbed Tsigereda for refusing to seek a romantic relationship and for refusing to accept her offer. Abrat Dorm also quoted her friend, who told the BBC, as saying that the suspect wanted her for a romantic relationship and that Rose had refused, adding that she had never responded.

Meanwhile, information received by the BBC from local police indicates that the victim and the suspect were having an affair. According to Bedru, the suspect did not pick up his phone and did not respond when he called her.
