Dr. Suleiman Baldo, an analyst on Sudanese affairs who specializes in studying conflicts in conflict areas, said that the nomination of US President Joe Biden as a new ambassador to Sudan is now awaiting the approval of Congress.
He said in an interview with Radio Dabanga that Washington's nomination of John Godfrey for the post of ambassador to Sudan means that it overrides its national security interests represented in combating international terrorism, and explains that it has fears that Sudan will become a hotbed for hosting violent extremism groups.
He said that John Godfrey's experience is limited to combating terrorism and not African affairs, explaining that he held the position of commander of the special unit in the US State Department to coordinate the international confrontation with violent extremism.
He drew attention to Sudan's pivotal role in combating terrorism due to its links with the African Sahel countries, which are a center for violent extremism operations.
He said that Godfrey's candidacy reveals the reasons why the United States has maintained a bad relationship with the military and security leaders, noting the continuation of dialogue between Sudanese agencies with their counterparts from the American agencies in the field of combating terrorism since the era of al-Bashir.
He said that the Sudanese agencies have proven that they are useful to the American security services in combating international terrorism, which explains the reasons for America's keenness on maintaining relations.
He pointed out that the US embassy in Khartoum has the largest CIA station in the region.
