Ethiopia: Consecutive days airstrikes in Tigray’s Alamata kill 42 civilians, injure more than 150, cause massive destruction

Ethiopia has conducted armed drones and fighter jets attacks in Tigray’s town of Alamata, for a third consecutive day, killing 42 civilians and injuring more than 150, sources told Globe News Net.

Thursday’s bombardment was the deadliest, killing 28 and injuring 78. A busy market, a Church and a hotel were among the targets on Thursday. The strikes on Friday and Saturday killed additional 14 civilians and injured more than 80, according to sources.

The three-consecutive-days armed drones and fighters jets bombardment has also ravaged civilian infrastructure, residential neighborhoods.

Sources said that a General hospital in the town which serves more than 500,000 people has been completely damaged by the bombardments.

Residents are fleeing the town to seek shelter in neighboring villages, mountains.

Transportation has been halted in Tigray since June. Tigray has been under total blockade and fuel has been one of the items that have been denied entry into Tigray.

This happened at a time whenHuman Rights Council set up an independent international rights probe into the atrocities committed in Tigray and other parts of Ethiopia since November 2020.

The region has been ravaged by series of airstrikes which have been intensifying over the past two months with massive loss of lives and damage to civilian infrastructure. A December 1 airstrike on Tekeze hydroelectric power for example plunged the entire region into darkness.

There is a growing international call for imposition of ‘No Fly Zone’ over the skies of the region to prevent further bloodshed and destruction.

, the previous Mengistu Hailemariam’s regime indiscriminately bombed civilians for a full day at a market in Hawzien, and killed 2,500 civilians.

The Emperor Haileslassie regime also conducted similar massive bombardments in various places in Tigray, with the help of Royal British Navy. An October 4, 1943 marketplace bombardment in Mekelle where 54 bombs were dropped, killed thousands, according to historical references.
