BINIAM GIRMAY (5TH) CONCLUDES HIS SEASON “BEYOND HIS EXPECTATIONS”

https://intermarche-wantygobert.eu/news/granpiemonte/

Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux was at the start of its third Italian semi classic in three days this Thursday, on the occasion of the Gran Piemonte (1.Pro, 7/10). The riders under the direction of Valerio Piva had to accomplish 168 kilometer at the foot of the Alps, without entering them as they did in the previous edition.

So, the climb towards La Serra (6.5 km at 5.2%) was the only categorized climb, in the first race half, offering an opportunity to the sprinters to battle for the victory. Biniam Girmay and Riccardo Minali could rely on the support of their teammates, and on former winner Jan Bakelants in particular.

The control of the time gap between the early breakaway and the peloton was perfect, so a complete peloton prepared for the expected bunch sprint in the streets of Borgosesia. But street furniture and roundabouts disorganized the approach to the sprint, almost causing a crash of Biniam Girmay in the final hectometers. But the Eritrean rider and his teammate Minali managed to avoid the incident and finished 5th and 7th respectively.

I finally felt optimal again after a couple of race days in weather circumstances which don't suit me. Thanks to the great support of Jan Bakelants and my other teammates I could shelter from the wind and approach the final kilometer with a lot of power. A narrowing of the street caused a move in the peloton and even though I managed to avoid a crash, I lost a lot of positions. Luckily I didn't crash, so I could still sprint to 5th place. I'm satisfied to conclude the season with this result.

I'm over the moon with my first two months in the World Tour. I knew that I was joining a good team, but I was surprised about the warm welcome within Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert. The staff and riders immediately made me feel like home and created circumstances in which I can perform without pressure. This was beyond my expectations and I'm taking this good feeling home tomorrow, to Eritrea. I can't wait to be reunited with my baby, who has really grown up those past three months, before returning to Europe for the preparation of the 2022 season with my other family!

Biniam Girmay Hailu

Meteor shower at the fabulous TotalEnergies International Mile in Madrid

Loice Chemnung and Saúl Ordóñez triumph in the christening of the test.

The first edition of the TotalEnergies Milla Internacional de Madrid, a test belonging to the prestigious NB Milla Urbana Internacional Circuit, was held this Sunday, October 3, in the heart of the capital, in the middle of Calle Serrano, where 2000 runners have gathered to enjoy one of the most legendary distances in athletics. Saúl Ordóñez and the Kenyan Loice Chemnung have been the winners of the elite tests, which have been preceded by the mile of legendary athletes and by the eleven races for popular athletes, in which the fastest athlete has been the historic Reyes Estévez. In addition, several hundred children have also been able to feel the essence of this distance in different tests adapted to their age.

Chemnung, with 4:48, and Ordóñez, with 4:15, will have to wait to know if their times allow them to travel as guests to the prestigious Fifth Avenue Mile (New York), since the athletes who achieve the best times of the NB Milla Urbana circuit will have this wonderful award. Undoubtedly, the rain has prevented the winners in Madrid from obtaining much faster records in line with their athletic quality.

One of the most emotional moments of the morning has been the beautiful legendary race, with José Luis González as the winner and in which athletic legends such as Fermín Cacho, Reyes Estévez, Martín Fiz, Jorge González Amo, Alberto Juzdado, Antonio have participated. Silio, Jesús España, Antonio Serrano, Luis Javier González, Ramiro Matamoros, Brian Treacy, Eugenio Barrios, José Luis Rodríguez Olmos "Chuvieco", Juan Antonio Crespo, Mayte Martínez, Rocío Ríos, Consuelo Alonso, Beatriz Ros, Yesenia Centeno and Aurora Pérez.

Although the weather conditions have been unkind to the test, the TotalEnergies International Mile in Madrid has been contested with indisputable success, recovering a great mile for the capital and laying the foundations for the future of an event that has already conquered thousands of runners. Rain, wind and a completely autumnal climate to be able to travel the 1609 meters that make up this distance.

1. Loice Chemnung (Kenya): 4:48

2. Marta Pérez: 4:57

3. Marta García: 4:58

2. Yemane Haileselassie (Eritrea): 4:16

3. Daniel Arce: 4:17
