Reunification of Eritrea with Ethiopia what a joke!
Eritreans fought a bloody war for thirty years and gained their independence and the case was sealed thirty years ago. Now we start hearing a talk about the reunification of Eritrea with Ethiopia once again especially from the Ethiopian side, I am not sure if such an idea is also being endorsed by Eritreans as well but, let us leave that for now and focus on Ethiopia.
What does Ethiopia need from Eritrea? The answer is a corridor to the outside world, in other words, a seaport, and nothing else.
Asab city and its port are just less than twenty miles away from the present Ethio/Eritrea demarcated territorial border. Some argue that Ethiopia has a historical claim over Asab and its environs, and there is a counter-argument on the opposite side which defies this claim and asserting that Ethiopia has never had a port without having the whole Eritrea as its part of it. I don’t want to get involved in that argument now as to what and where belongs to who and to whom, but I know one thing for sure Ethiopia has the right for access to the sea under the norm and in accordance with international law.
Does Ethiopia have the right to legally claim over Asab as part of its sovereign territory? Has the right to lease the port of Asab with a reasonable fee and take full control of the duty and facility? Or maybe can Asab be Ethiopia’s free territory under Eritrean sovereignty like what Guantanamo bay of Cubas territory is to the United States?
There should be a way for Ethiopia to retain access to the outside world through Asab without kissing northern Tigraways rear. To facilitate all the possible options of using or controlling Asab, first and foremost, for Ethiopia, stabilizing the domestic politics and uniting its politically divided people under democratic rule should be the top priority. Then and only then Ethiopia would be able to promote her interest and negotiate with strong terms on what is good for her.
Other than that, as Ethiopia’s domestic politics stands now, and talking about reunification with Eritrea is going to be none other than being a playing toy in the hands of Eritrean Tigraways. I don’t know why these Hamote bis present-day Ethiopian politicians are losing sight of this.
What Ethiopia needs is internal peace and consolidating the unity of her people, once that is achieved, all we need from Eritrea is how Ethiopia to use Asab, and we leave that answer for northern Tigraways to come up with a fair solution that will help both nations. If we encounter any defiance then, we mobilize our united 100m people and we will take the indefinite war to Eritrean soil until Ethiopia’s interest access to the sea fully respected.

Re: Reunification of Eritrea with Ethiopia what a joke!
I don't wanna hijack your well put thread but you are talking like Eritrea belong solely to Tigrinya and that's so wrong, Eritrea doesn't belong them, It belong to eight different ethnic groups, After Isaias Afwerki, Ethiopia and Afar will begin access to the Afar sea negotiations.
Re: Reunification of Eritrea with Ethiopia what a joke!
Why does Ethiopia obsess with assap. What's the difference between assap and massawa. Why doesn't Ethiopia claim massawa. I never understood this. Assap fixation.

EPRDF,
Where did you get the idea of ‘Ethiopia has the right to access to the sea’? I hope they don’t teach that in Meles Leadership Academy. I know a lot of countries who do all their shopping on the dry land.
If you want to use the same logic, why don’t you storm Dgibouti or Somaliland?

Let me tell you how wrong you are. Actually it would be easier to Ethiopians to claim Djibouti than Assab because they have enough legally proven documentations of renting Djibouti to France for limited time. That time my friend had been over due. Otherwise, Ethiopia has neither legal nor documents that can present about any inches of Eritrea territory. In fact the best demarcated borders in Africa is Ethio-Eritreans. Now saying that the two sisterly nations are entered in best understanding phase .. unlike your mini deserted nation, Ethiopians will use Eritreans port for Free. You heard me right ... Free!!
FYI- the only reason Ethiopians don’t claiming your tiny nation is because they know that Djibouti is French’s b!tch so they don’t wanna mess with the muscular p!imp, The French.
So agamewoch calm down and stay at what you know best, መንከባለል

Asab and adjacent peripheral territory is the ancestral land of the Afari people. Unfortunately, the Eritrean Tigraways are the majority in number in a country called Eritrea, ethnic Tigraways of Eritrea are the ones controlling the state and running every aspect of the life of the land. Afaris have silently been cleansing from their homeland by ethnic Tigraways in recent years, they were systematically forced to evacuate from their land and to settle somewhere else in order to alienate them from where they belong, the seacoast and the area. Afaris in Eritrea are minority and very weak today.
Warya Zakow,
Ethiopia has some historical connection with the Afar region. Massawa has always been an integral part of the Italian colony Eritrea, but a piece of the Asab territory has its own distinct history. Asab was sold in cash money by Sultan Ibrahim.
Meles academy was always believed Asab and the entire seacoast belong to Eritrea solely. The losers Meles and co fought and realized that and went in a dust bin. They lost and they made lose 95m of us with them.

EPRDF,
Thank You about your explanation and insight about Meles academy. However, do they teach about the differences between right and privilege ?
Accessing Assab port can only be a privilege for Ethiopia since Meles signed it off and now it belongs to a sovereign country? What am I missing?
Re: Reunification of Eritrea with Ethiopia what a joke!
Like it or not, economic integration is a must. This does not mean one side will take the other as an advantage , it is a win-win. No country is an island, let alone Eritrea and Ethiopia. If anyone thinks, Eritrea wants Ethiopian in permanent instability that is so stupid so does Ethiopia doesn't need Eritrea's in permanent instability and cycle of poverty. Ethiopian stability and peace is more important and essential to Eritrea than the West be it the U.S. or Europe. So, it matters most to Eritrea. It is a no brainer. So does Ethiopia that Eritrea's stability matters most to her. Come on people, it is not only the macroeconomic/ politics that matters to ordinary citizens, it is also the micro-economic/kitchen table/ stuffs the most. The TPLF thugs wants publicity about fake double digit growth, 99.9% landslide victory, etc. stuff and applause from their Western masters while ordinary citizens are suffering - to the extent of buying hotel /restaurant refusals, ጉርሻ ገዝቶ በማደር. Almost, for the last 30 years simply because of TPLF's inferiority complex they have with Eritrea and lust of controlling power, rendered the two countries into poverty, mass exodus and sufferings. So, when TPLF shed their crocodile tears as if they care about Eritrea all of a sudden now is just part of their usual culture of lie and deceit. Do they even remember how they confiscated the business and homes of Eritreans during the Badme crisis/war?

I am fully aware of the situation, They will pay heavy price for their heinous crime against defenceless Afar civilians.
They are not the majority in number for the simple fact that no population census has ever been carried out in Eritrea, Moreover, almost 95% of Tigrinya's population now live outside the country, which I assume we can all agree on, The Tigre are the majority ethnic group in Eritrea and the current Asmara's population is less than ten thousand.Abylady,

Ethiopians and Eritreans are already wised up.

How can Ethiopia rent out something to the French when they didn't own anything. And Eritrea would never give a free port to Ethiopia.

Please stop ethnic counting. There is no [deleted] ethnicity in any country in Africa or much of the world. Eritreans have inspiring history to be able to proudly stand as a nation. Let's leave ethnic politics for Ethiopia and Meles academy.
