Mining
Danakali remains well-placed to become zero-carbon potash producer

https://www.proactiveinvestors.com.au/c ... 45538.html

Thu 01 Apr 2021

The release of the company’s 2020 financial report reveals Danakali has nearly $10 million in the bank as it seeks to produce environmentally sustainable potash at its world-class Colluli Project in Eritrea.

Renewable energy sources can be incorporated into the future generation of power for the project.

Danakali Ltd (ASX:DNK) (LON:DNK) (OTCMKTS:SMBSF) (FRA:SO3) has set itself up for success in 2021 following a period of significant change, as it seeks to become a zero-carbon sulphate of potash (SOP) producer.

SOP is a premium potassium fertiliser required for healthy plant growth, plant metabolism, optimisation of crop yields and quality of produce.

It is a necessary fertiliser for high-value, chloride sensitive crops such as avocados, cocoa, coffee beans, grapes, berries and tree nuts, and helps transform arid and acidic soils.

As recently reported by Proactive, Danakali is evaluating the renewable energy options of solar, wind and geothermal energy https://www.proactiveinvestors.com.au/c ... 43413.html as it attempts to convert its Colluli Project in Eritrea to a zero-carbon footprint.

Early assessment work on the solar and wind energy potential of Colluli has been completed and confirmed these renewable energy sources can be incorporated into the future generation of power for the project.

Set up for big 2021

The company’s 2020 financial report reveals Danakali has $9.7 million in cash and commenting on its position, chairman Seamus Cornelius said shareholders could look forward to positive developments in 2021.
Our initial goal is to create a responsible, environmentally-friendly, zero carbon, premium fertiliser business that clearly links Colluli SOP with the production of nutritious crops, bolsters global food and nutrition security, and improves millions of lives,
he said.
The Colluli resource comprises three potassium bearing salts in solid form: Sylvinite, Carnallitite and Kainitite.

These salts are suitable for high yield, low energy production of Sulphate of Potash (SOP), which is a high-quality potash fertiliser carrying a price premium over the more common Muriate of Potash (MOP).

SOP is chlorine-free and is commonly applied to high-value crops such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, and coffee. Economic resources for primary production of SOP are geologically scarce and there are few current primary producers.
Key project developments

Danakali made several key developments towards that goal throughout 2020 and into 2021, highlighted by the Eritrean Ministry of Energy & Mines accepting the Notice of Commencement of Mine Development for Colluli.

The company also released its first-ever sustainability report, which outlined Danakali’s ongoing and planned contributions of its Colluli Potash Project to sustainable development in Eritrea.

As reported by Proactive, Danakali will now work with preferred power provider, Aggreko PLC https://www.proactiveinvestors.com.au/LON:AGK/Aggreko/ (LSE:AGK) (OTCMKTS:ARGKF) (FRA:4A4B) to provide full scope of support services for the supply, commissioning, and maintenance of the power plant for the project, then transfer to Colluli, under a five-year contract.

The use of beach wells as the water intake alternative was confirmed as a valid optimisation, with final test work underway to confirm details of the filtered seawater optimisation for the process plant.

Earlier this year the company also undertook a successful restructure, https://www.proactiveinvestors.com.au/c ... 42379.html which saw the CEO role made redundant, Cornelius step into the chairman role and board fees slashed by a third.

Dr Rod McEachern, a former director for Process and Product Innovation at Nutrien and PotashCorp, was appointed a chief operating officer while three new directors were appointed to the board.

TPLF's remnants' dissemination of disinformation continues, relentlessly. They are against the peace, signed between Eritrea & Ethiopia. Here, they're attempting to portray the Martyr's Day commemoration of 2013 as Eritrean army dead in Tigray. Beware, of these rodents!

Schools have re-opened nation-wide today with implementation of reinforced modalities, to curb potential spike in COVID-19 transmission rates. To this end, all schools will operate in 3-shifts to reduce congestion/class-size & localized infection-tracing methods will be enforced.

Gash-Barka: Construction and Expansion of Strategic Roads

By: Kesete Ghebrehiwet

https://shabait.com/2021/03/31/gash-bar ... gic-roads/

NATION BUILDING

Mar 31, 2021

Eritrea’s development programs aim at bringing about social justice across the nation, and for this reason, every project is implemented with a view to ensuring an even distribution of social services in the six regions of the country.

These development projects would not be realized without road networks, that enable the facilitation of all development undertakings. This article presents the efforts being made in the Western Development Zone, which covers the Gash-Barka region, in the construction and expansion of strategic roads linking the Gash- Barka region with the other parts of Eritrea and transnational roads linking the country with Ethiopia and Sudan.

To help ensure effective and speedy implementation of all kinds of projects, the strategic roads in the Gash-Barka region are being expanded while new roads are constructed in the remote parts of the region. The Eritrea’s Mapping and Information Center (EMIC), identifies suitable sites and give designs to local construction companies that carry out the development undertakings.

Eng. Angesom Teame, the Senior GIS Expert at EMIC and head of the Western Development Zone, said that as part of the overall development undertakings being implemented in the Western Development Zone, four strategic roads are being built in the Gash- Barka region. The 115.7 km Amalait-Haranait route is very strategic, covering large farmland in an area; where the Barka- -Anseba or Barka–Selea Rivers intersect. The construction of this road, is expected to impact major development activities in the future. The road, which is 16m wide, will have 11 bridges, 17 Pipe Culverts (PC), 16 Single Horse Shoes (SHS) and Six Double Horse Shoes (DHS), and other hydraulic structures.

The Amalait-Haranait road, is expected to improve the livelihoods of the residents of this part of the Gash-Barka region. Eng. Angesom said that in the past there was hardly any major infrastructure in the western low-land of Eritrea, particularly in the arid zones around Kerkebet and its environs. This, he said, has now changed with the construction of water dams along with distribution facilities and the construction of roads, which have brought about a dramatic change in education, water supply, and healthcare facilities. The construction of Amalait-Haranait road has enabled residents of Atay and Agumite to have easy access to the healthcare services, provided in Amalait and Kerkebet.

Having gained experience at the plantations around Kerkebet, residents of Ataya and Agumite now engage in modern farming practices and sell their products at the markets in Kerkebet. The big water tanks installed in Atay and Agumite have made access to potable water easier, which is, indeed, the result of the construction of the roads in this zone.

The Teseney-Omhajor route, which is 102 km long, has 53 hydraulic structures that include seven bridges, three DHS, four SHS, and 39 pipe culverts. Mohammed Ata, Deputy Manager of Bidho General Construction Company, which is expanding the road and performing other earthworks, said that the road alignment has been restructured and major foundation works have been done to correspond with the future plan of paving the Teseney-Omhajor road with asphalt. Once these activities are carried out, the road will be asphalted to provide viable transport services in the region.
This strategic road has now been expanded to a double lane structure, from 20 meters to 40 meters in width,
Eng. Angesom elaborated.

The Teseney-Omhajor road, is extremely important for the speedy implementation of agricultural and other related development programs in the Gash-Barka region. Mr. Getachew Merhatsion, General Manager of EMIC said,
The plan is to connect Teseney, Goluj, and Omhajor through an asphalted road and to connect Omhajor to the neighboring countries. To that end, a strategic bridge is being built in Goluj, and a design for the construction of a big bridge that connects Omhajor and Humera has been finalized.
Another strategic route linking Eritrea and Sudan, is the 35 km Forto-Sawa-Tamarat road, that is 20m wide. The road has a total of 35 hydraulic structures, including six bridges, three DHS, five SHS, and 21 pipe culverts that are under construction.
The construction and expansion of Forto-Sawa-Tamarat road are very strategic both for Eritrea and Sudan. Tamarat or the Adibara area has the potential to serve as a land port for Sudan, shortening the 1,200 km distance from Port Sudan to Kessala to only 300 Km from Massawa to Kessala,
Eng. Angesom elaborated.

The construction of this strategic road impacts the socio-economic activity of communities and speeds up the implementation of major development undertakings, in all parts of the country. The Massawa- Asmara-Himberti-Habela-Cheatat- Mensura and Akordat-Mogoraib, as well as Forto-Sawa-Tamarat and Adibara, are all strategically linked with one another to connect the Northern Red Sea region with the Gash-Barka region and then Kassala of Sudan.

According to Mr. Getachew, the Barentu-Mogoraib road has already been asphalted while the Mogorab-Forto-Sawa road is being asphalted and expanded. The Forto- Sawa-Tamarat route, a dirt road, is in use while hydraulic structures have been designed for future implementation in the Tamarat- Adibara road.

The 184.5 km long Mendefera- Barentu route, which is under expansion and construction, is another strategic road with a total of 131 hydraulic structures, including eight bridges, four DHS, 20 SHS, and 99 pipe culverts. It is the longest of all four strategic roads, in the Western Development Zone. The Mendefera-Barentu route links Kharkasha, Bushka, and Shamboko areas of the Gash-Barka region to Areza and Mendefera of the Southern region. It links not only the Southern and Gash-Barka regions, but will be an alternative route for motorists to transport goods from Massawa to Omhajor and then to Ethiopia.

The development programs aimed at improving the living standards of the people have been implemented, with the active participation of communities. Through their active participation in the construction of strategic infrastructures, local communities in all development zones are made to feel that they are the owners of the development projects. The construction and expansion of the roads in the Western Development Zone is yet another example of efforts being made to evenly distribute services and empower local communities, through their participation in development programs.

The Demise of the TPLF Junta: Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

By: Senait Hadera

https://ypfdj.org/the-demise-of-the-tpl ... t-to-dust/

Since the launch of TPLF’s suicidal misadventure five months ago, citizens of the Horn of Africa region are observing with incredulity two intertwined reactions from some personalities, states, organizations and the corporate media. The first and much pronounced aspect, is the attempt to create an alternate reality of the conflict. This goes in parallel with the publicly displayed melodramatic stages of grief, that these entities are going through.

TPLF lobbyists in the garb of think tanks, NGOs, members of governmental and international organization bureaucracies have been working frantically to create an Orwellian reality using all the tools at their disposal. They want the world to believe that the junta who launched coordinated military attacks on 200 positions of the Ethiopia’s Northern Command and neighboring regions, indiscriminately fired missiles on cities in Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea; to be seen as an innocent victim! The junta that committed well-documented massacres and unspeakable atrocities; including in Mai Kadra and on Eritreans interned in camps in Tigray; is portrayed as reliable informant on fictitious atrocities. They are resorting to punishing the forces that contained and defeated TPLF’s misadventures; while scrapping the barrel to resuscitate the criminal junta shunned by peoples of the Horn.

Simultaneously, they are going through the stages of grief over the defeat of TPLF. It started, with denial. When TPLF was decimated in the battle field and went on the run; they held on to the belief that it was junta’s well-calculated move.

This was followed, by anger. Once the TPLF leaders with whom they wined and dined and who signed their checks or to whom they gave blank checks were caught and killed in battle; they went into a rage and blamed everyone but those who started the military confrontation. In the midst of their anger they resorted to scapegoating a neighboring country, Eritrea, for the disasters created by TPLF.

Five months down the road, they are yet to exhibit any semblance of accepting the demise of TPLF and having closure. It might not be easy to give up on their hopes and write off the huge financial, diplomatic, military and public relations support and investment they lavished on TPLF for three decades; or abandon their vision of the Horn with TPLF playing a major role; or discard their expectation for countries of the Horn to triangulate their regional interactions through the EU or US as third parties; or throw away their ploy of having Eritrea contained and excluded from the regional sphere.

Their vision for the region diametrically contrasts, with the wishes of the peoples and Governments of the Horn of Africa. The way forward is for all the States to engage on equal terms for mutual benefits, consolidate the peace and create complementarity that benefits their citizens, engaging with countries near and far as equal partners.

In a military confrontation that it started, TPLF has crumbled into tiny pieces and got swept by the wind; with zero possibility of the pieces coming together again. The sooner the external actors accept this irrefutable reality, the better chance they have to salvage any opportunity of engaging the countries of the region in shaping a peaceful and prosperous Horn of Africa.

The personalities, states, organizations and the corporate media who are laboring to create alternate reality are invited to have closure, accept TPLF’s demise, cross the Rubicon, be a force for good in the Horn. The lobbyists will join you, once the checks dry up.
