At first sight, it seems Sudan is a filthy opportunist taking advantage of the fact that Ethiopia is currently involved in a conflict in Tigray!
I believe this is even an insult to the Ethiopian army to be defeated by the army of a country that has lately been barely functioning, as Sudan says that "
The confrontations were against members of the Ethiopian army, not militias."!
On the other hand, if the Ethiopian government happens to be in opposition to the "lamentable" action of Sudan, then this, in addition to the protracted conflict in Tigray, call into question about the truth of the strength and capability of the Ethiopian army! It seems to me, the Ethiopian army is all about quantity and not quality. Needless to remind that Ethiopian army, which has always boasted about superiority militarily, was defeated with ease both by Somalia and Eritrea in the past.
Just a thought!
Somaliman,
with all due respect, I beg to differ. I wouldn't dub sudan as "filthy opportunist" rather they were smarter than abi. In wars there is no such thing as opportunist or morally justifible move. The sudanese were waiting for such chance 25 years long and once they noticed that abi's army are stuck in the quagmire of tigray they exploited the situation. Call it military smartness.
To add here, according to some tabloid egyptian newspapers, the sudanese authorities have already started to approach the weyannes and assured them that they will be ready to work with them if the sudanese border areas are destabilized.

Abere has the closest answer to some of the queries. Just to add, Sudan would not have dared against Ethiopia, had it not been for the full backing of Egypt and the current Ethiopian war in Tigray. This is not new, we have been talking about Egypt's intention in the region for more than 150 years. We had wars against Egyptian invasion in Gundet, Gura, Bogos and in the valleys around Ginda' to Massawa in the 1870s (all in the current Eritrea). Egypt was not supporting the creation of the Arabist Jebha ELF for nothing in 1960. It was all to destabilize Ethiopia and to control the Red Sea region as its sphere of influence and the flow of the headwaters of the Abay river.

--- Why did Sudan invade Ethiopia before but now? Because Sudan was not sure if the land was theirs and they knew they can't face off Ethiopian army.
--- Why would Ethiopia force herself into the notes and dairies of Sudan's former colonial master? No, neither moral nor legal rationale require Ethiopia to technically be colonized in the 21st century by inheriting Sudan's colonial document - Sudan can keep it that for herself.
--- Does Sudan invasion and occupation of some of these lands confirm and validate ownership? No, it does not. Occupation does not legitimate ownership. Sudan can temporarily occupy and may be noisy about it but moving forward it will pay incalculable price - Sudan doesn't have neither the resource nor the drive to finish the marathon race against Ethiopia. I assure you Ethiopia will swiftly reclaim and will seal Sudan's defeat.
