Ethio-Kenya Road Provides Ethiopia with Better Negotiating Position in Port services

Addis Ababa December 29/2020 by (ENA)

The recently inaugurated Ethio-Kenya road would expand Ethiopia’s options for port services, National Logistics Transformation Council disclosed.

It is to be recalled that this 500-kilometer road, which is also part of the Trans African Highway project, was inaugurated on December 9, 2020 by the leaders of the two countries.

In addition to its contribution to bolster trade, investment and people-to-people relations of the countries, the road will provide Ethiopia with better negotiating position in terms of port services, Logistics expert at the National Logistics Transformation Council (NLTC), Temesgen Yehune told ENA.

According to Temesgen, the road will become vital outlet for Ethiopia to use the Lamu Port – South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor, which is expected to accommodate some 32 ships at a time.

Ethiopia is also believed to immensely benefit from the Lamu Port by facilitating its export and import trade, especially through the southern part of the country, he added.

The construction of the Ethio- Kenya road will provide Ethiopia with additional alternatives to help increase the nation’s capability to effectively negotiate in the area of port services in terms of port tariffs among other things, he underlined.

In addition to enhancing Ethiopia’s trade and investment ties with Kenya, it will also serve as a major corridor for exporting Ethiopia’s products to the world market, according to Temesgen.

He indicated that the road is a convenient route particularly for industrial villages located in Hawassa, Yirgalem and Yabelo surroundings.

“The construction of the road has drastically reduced the time spent via land transportation. It reduced the time that used to take more than three days to 10 to 8 hours” he added.

Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Dina Mufti said on his part that Ethiopia and Kenya are desirous to further expand their strong economic ties.

In this regard, the Ethio-Kenya road is of great importance to facilitate Ethiopia’s export and import trade, he indicated.

The 500-kilometer road from Hawassa-Moyale and One-stop Border Post will make the customs system clear, easy and more efficient, he added.

You don't care about Ethiopia, your personal goals is to strangle and isolate Amhara and Tigray from Eritrea and much of the sea trade routes.

Massawa and Assab port are ready to use and Berbera port will be ready to use in march 2021, Anyway, Somalis in Kenya have already warned Kenya's corrupt government, they told alcoholic president Uhuru kenyatta nobody and nothing will come in and nothing will go out Lamu port without our permission, they own the whole Eastern and North Eastern Kenya.

Lamu port will never be finished.

Uhuru's Mega Project Runs Into More Headwinds

By John Paul Simiyu on 16 December 2019 - 5:50 pm

President Uhuru Kenyatta's ambitious Lapsset project (Lamu Port and Lamu-Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor) has run into more headwinds after Garissa Governor Ali Korane ordered Lapsset officials surveying land meant for the project in the county to defer the exercise forthwith.

The Kenya News Agency was first to report on Monday, December 16, that Korane took issue with the Lapsset officials stating that his county had not been consulted before the officials started surveying the land.

“Land is a devolved function and all departments that deal with land are under the county government. The Lapsset project should, therefore, engage the county government through the relevant departments on the land they intend to use for the project,” he stated. The governor, reacting to information that the officials in the Ksh2.5 trillion project had started prospecting for land in parts of Ijara and Fafi sub-counties, insisted that land in Garissa County and the North-Eastern region was communal and thus held in trust by the respective communities.

While the governor made it clear that he was not opposed to the project, he did not take kindly the fact that Lapsset officials overlooked his authority as the county head.

"We want to know from Lapsset who authorised them to survey land in Garissa County without the input of the county government. This is wrong and it is an acceptable,” he stated with finality.

Reports from the Daily Nation on September 28, 2019, indicate that Uhuru, during his visit to the Lamu Port and the adjacent infrastructure projects that form the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) corridor lamented about the project’s slow pace.

The publication reported that Uhuru was unimpressed by the progress of the infrastructure outside the port, especially the roads meant to link the port with the hinterland and called upon the officials to speed it up.

The Ksh2.5 trillion project envisions the construction of a port, power plant, railway and other facilities from the Lamu port, through to South Sudan and Ethiopia.

According to Kenya 2019 population census, The vast majority (99.99 percent) of people in Eastern and North Eastern Kenya are Somalis, However, there are other ethnic minority groups in the Eastern province and Tana river, Coast, such as Borana, Orma, Sakuye, Gabra and Pokomo etc, totalling less than one hundred and fifty thousand people, Kenya Bantu and Nilotic regions are densely populated while Somali region is sparsely populated region

Lamu port will definitely attract more Bantu and Nilotic migrants in Somali region which is very bad for Somalis, So Abiy don't help Kenya government develop Lamu port, It would be nothing without Ethiopia.

Kenya Ethnic Groups.

  • County 25 Marsabit is inhabited by Majority Somalis and few Borana and Gabra.
  • Country 9 Isiolo is inhabited by Majority Somalis and few Borana and Sakuye.
  • County 40 Tana River is inhabited by Majority Somalis and few Orma and Pokomo
  • County 21 Lamu is inhabited By Majority Somalis and few Bantu Swahili.
  • County 19 Kenya border with Tanzania, Kwale is inhabited by Majority Mijikenda but Somalis are trying to conquer.
North Eastern region plus Lamu county is one hundred percent Somalis.
