EPLF Statement, on plans by Italian companies to dump nuclear waste in the Eritrean Red Sea coast with the blessing of the gov of Italy & other powers. This accusation was also addressed by the Sub-Committee on the Transportation of Hazardous material in the U.S Congress, in 1989.

In July 1988, the Ethiopian/Derg government accused the EPLF of planning to dump radioactive waste in exchange for military assistance from unnamed Western countries.

Well.....one of the best and the brightest who sacrificed his youth for Eritrea. He happened to be one of the lucky ones who came back alive and is able to tell his story.

Can you imagine how many Eritreans with this gentleman's caliber we've lost over the last 60 years?

I take solace in the fact that that land has always had a fertile womb- the land of Zerai Deres, Moges Asghedom, Abraham Deboch, Aman Andom, Ibrahim Affa, Ali Said Abdella, Wuchu....and so many!

Community based potato research brings commendable change in farmers

NATION BUILDING

https://shabait.com/2020/09/08/communit ... n-farmers/

On Sep 8, 2020

The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) of the Ministry, is promoting potato production through farmers-based research. The project, which was launched in 2015 includes potato seed provision, multiplication, and, capacity development of farmers and experts on potato seed management to boost the productivity of seed and ware potato.

Mr. Medhanie Mehari, Potato Seed Project Coordinator, stated:
the intervention has shown promising results, towards sustainable potato seed supply program to farmers.
In the past five years since the launching of the programme, more than 1100 farmers have benefited directly from the supply of certified potato seeds; while more than 2000 farmers and 300 experts received extensive training courses in various regions.

As a result, potato productivity has increased dramatically in all the targeted areas.

This newsletter presents an exemplary farmer and beneficiary of the project.

Eyob Tsegay, 49, is a farmer who has been involved in potato farming for the last 12 years in Adi-nefas, Maekel Region. This farmer is known for his extra-ordinary experience, in vegetable production and disease management. According to a report from the project, Mr. Eyob and his Father Mr. Tsegay are among the early beneficiaries of the potato seed project. Initially he was given G2 Electra variety potato seed in September 2015. This farmer has been able to multiply the seeds on his own initiative and saved every generation for next season. At this time, he has successfully maintained the generation up to ninth sequence, G9.

This exemplary farmer has been enrolled in the continuous training and seed provision programmes, enunciated by the project. He confirmed that he had attended three different potato production and disease management training courses and farmers’ field days, in the past years.

Mr. Eyob maintains that
Electra potato seed is very rewarding, even in adverse conditions. The variety is robust and can last long, but it needs change of place every season and enough manure to maintain its capacity.

Mr. Eyob further underlined:
Crop rotation is one of the key factors to the success of potato seed production and increases productivity, as it mitigates the disease and pest reoccurrences. Moreover, I always avoid the off types during flowering and I remove yellowish and stunted crops; and I throw them far away as they are the main causes of potato seed degeneration diseases.
Finally, Mr. Eyob points out that he saves the egg-sized potato tubers in ventilated shades for next generation to use them as seeds.

The Project Coordinator, for his part, told this newsletter that in addition to the diligence of the farmer, his farm location also helped him to get bumper harvest. The farm is situated in a windy area which inhibits free movements of aphids and other disease transmission vector insects, which are the main causes of potato degeneration. Currently, the farmer is not only known for his good harvests but also as a potato seed distributor to some farmers around Mendefera, Southern Region. For instance, this season he has sold about 30 quintal of potato seeds. He had harvested 164.7 quintals of potato tuber, from 11 quintals of seed. This yield is equivalent to around, 300 quintals per hectare.

Italian architecture in Eritrea: the Town Hall of Asmara

Italian architecture in Eritrea: the Town Hall of Asmara

SIENA. 7 September 2020 The Town Hall of Asmara, wanted by Governor Ferdinando Martini was initially housed in a villa in the former European district until the end of 1930 and later in a larger building in Denden Street, next to the Capitol Cinema, and remained here also during the period of 'British military administration. Only since 1951 has the Town Hall been housed in what was once the Government Palace, in a rationalist style. Little is known about the evolution of this building, the first project of which dates back to the late 1930s. This monumental building consisted of two floors, and was only finished in the early 1950s on a large area that was originally intended as a park at the southern end of the former Largo Puglie.

The first stage of construction included a basement, a ground floor and a first floor, in the center of which is the tower, with the recognizable balcony intended for public ceremonies, although it is doubtful that it was ever used for that purpose. Until 1940 some lictor beams were visible on the central tower, today removed.

The interiors, even today, are elegant and very impressive. An elegant marble staircase with wooden side rails starts from the main entrance, continuing inside the hall to the meeting room and upper floors. The beautiful official meeting room is located at the rear of the building and was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965. In 1971 a third floor was added and the tower was raised to match the proportions of the new building.

Outside the windows in the two upper floors are elongated, unlike those on the ground floor which are square in shape. The facade of the central body of the building and the adjoining tower is covered with green mosaic tiles with geometric motifs, and the window sills are of gray marble.

This is deliberate disinformation repeated ad nauseam, by some murky intel agencies. The sites have changed overtime: it was Dahlak islands before; now morphed to Emba Soira - in Eritreas's hinterland.

Israel Establishes Secret Gulf Intelligence Bases

September 7, 2020

By Richard Silverstein

https://www.richardsilverstein.com/2020 ... nce-bases/

Since 2016, Israel has secretly established https://nziv.net/51459/ a forward electronic intelligence base in Eritrea to monitor the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, https://nziv.net/20766/ through which much of the Gulf’s oil shipments travel on their way to customers throughout the world.

This base, located on the country’s highest mountain, Emba Soira, outside the country’s capital, Asmara, monitors activities of the Houthi rebels in Yemen fighting against UAE and Saudi Arabia. Further, it also serves as a command and control center for Gulf air force attacks in Yemen. It is a means of ensuring that Egypt would never threaten Israeli interests in the southern portion of the Red Sea, especially movement of its shipping. The base also enables Israel to monitor arms trafficking in Sudan for the benefit of Hamas. Finally, it serves as a forward base to monitor Iranian shipping, and that country’s efforts to penetrate Eritrea, after it was ejected from Sudan following the overthrow of its dictator, Omar al Bashir.

Socotra Island straddles the Bab al-Mandab Straits, offering a strategic overlook of all sea traffic to and from Yemen and Iran

The Israeli article linked above notes a second secret Israeli base planned in the Gulf. After the recent normalization of relations https://www.richardsilverstein.com/2020 ... ut-of-hat/ between Israel and the UAE, both states are eyeing a base on the Yemeni island of Socotra. According to a Turkish report, https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.trtwor ... -39422/amp the Yemeni tribal chief of the island told a Syrian media outlet about a recent joint visit by a senior Israeli-UAE intelligence delegation tasked with choosing sites for a new military intelligence base. As in Eritrea, Socotra is mountainous and offers locations advantageous for siting electronic (SIGINT) intelligence facilities.

Though the island chain is under Yemeni sovereignty, UAE took control of the territory and maintains a military presence there.

Among other things, the base will permit Israel to monitor shipping between Iran and China. After signing https://www.richardsilverstein.com/2020 ... -at-trump/ a $400-billion 25-year military-commercial pact, China is expected to provide logistics, advanced technology and weapons systems to Iran, much of which would travel through these waters, providing an excellent vantage point from which to observe the sea traffic.

Socotra would be Israel’s second major intelligence base in the region and a further example of its attempt to project its power far beyond its southern borders (Israel already projects its power beyond its northern borders into Syria, Lebanon and even Iraq). This is, of course, ironic since one of the main claims against Iran is its purported “expansionist” aims to project its Islamist revolution beyond its border into Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. Israel has long preceded Iran in this game. And its hypocrisy in accusing the Iranians of doing precisely what it has done for decades, is immense.

In a separate development related to UAE-Israel normalization, Intelligence Online reports https://www.intelligenceonline.com/grey ... 596276-gra that the Gulf state is lobbying its own allies in the region to join it in forging relations with Israel. Among those negotiating for such a deal are the Yemeni movement supported by UAE, Libya’s militia leader, Khalifa Haftar, and Mohammed Dahlan, the former Palestinian strongman who has become one of the UAE Crown Prince’s senior security advisor.

These are not the most savory characters in the region. But that doesn’t seem to put off Israel’s own unsavory leaders, who never met an Arab dictator they didn’t like. All they need to find favor with Israel is an authoritarian regime, lots of petro-cash, and a hankering for Israeli weapons and spy technology.

Danakali outlines huge potash potential on its Africa doorstep

By Robin Bromby

September 8, 2020

Africa could potentially increase its production of cereals and grains by two or three times if more fertiliser became available.

Emerging sulphate of potash (SOP) producer Danakali (ASX: DNK) https://smallcaps.com.au/stocks/?symbol=DNK has passed another key step in Eritrea and now heads for production, not only with Asian markets in mind, but plans to realise huge potential in food-hungry Sub-Saharan Africa.

The key statistic: Africa has the potential to produce between two and three times the present quantity of cereals and grains, lifting it to account for 20% of global output.

Similar increases could also be seen in livestock and horticulture crops if more fertiliser was available.

The key factor: these goals can be achieved only if African farmers can get their hands on sufficient fertiliser supplies, including potash-based ones.

Danakali is targeting first production two years out at its Colluli SOP project in Eritrea.

Last week, the company reported it had completed the mobilisation phase which includes stages one and two of its engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) study. These phases relate to project design work, the processing plant and associated infrastructure work, as well as significant de-risking work with a number of environmental and cost-optimisation opportunities identified

Danakali chief executive officer Niels Wage said the studies have given increased certainty and understanding of the Colluli project schedule.
The detailed review process again validates the robustness of the project and previous technical studies,
he added.

Colluli is owned by the Colluli Mining Share Company, a 50:50 joint venture between Danakali and the Eritrean National Mining Company. In late July, the company received mine development approval from the Eritrean government, which specified mid-December 2022 as the latest possible start-up of mining.

Danakali has reported a 1.1 billion ore reserve with a mine life of almost 200 years.

Asian markets first target, but Africa emerging

Danakali has long seen Asia, particularly India, as a prime market. But its most recent presentation indicates that Africa is now also at the forefront of its business thoughts.

The potential to increase farm production on the continent is tremendous, although it is a long-neglected subject.

The number of countries that have significant amounts of uncultivated cropland runs to 18; this includes Ethiopia and Sudan, both neighbours to the company’s planned mine in Eritrea, as well as Mali, Angola, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Madagascar.

Other countries including Gabon, Republic of Congo, Guinea and Rwanda don’t have enough land – a problem that could be alleviated by higher yields.

Although the SOP within the first module of anticipated production is already committed to as part of the take-or-pay agreement with global fertiliser producer Eurochem, Danakali is also able to sell its product outside of the offtake contract. This module is expected to produce 472ktpa of premium SOP product, with the second module expected to increase total SOP production to 944ktpa.

Danakali hasn’t decided which markets to target, however Africa would be a logical choice, as the company wants to support the local farmers and agriculture in the region. Other opportunities are South-east Asia, India is also a growth market where SOP is currently under-applied.

Africa has half of the world’s uncultivated arable land

In fact, Africa has 202 million hectares of arable land that remains uncultivated — the greatest area of such land in the world.

According to Danakali, significant investment is required: six times the amount of high-quality seeds, eight times the present use of fertilisers, as well as large investments in crop storage and irrigation. Only 6% of Africa’s cultivated land area is irrigated.

And here is the nub of the problem as shown by Danakali: present farming methods in Africa result in potassium being stripped out of soils faster than it is being replaced.

The company lists the benefits that an operating mine at Colluli will bring to Africa.

Firstly, a 200-year mine life ensures long-term availability.

Two, producing high-quality fertilisers in Africa will mean lower transport costs than importing from another region of the world.

Three, Danakali has the ability to produce a suite of potash products catering to the various needs of African farmers — the potassium-bearing salts of the Danakil Depression, in which Colluli is located, are unique in that they can be used for a diverse range of potash types.

And four, the potash will allow African farmers to move from subsistence cropping to producing higher value crops.

Progress has begun, though. Fertiliser plants are being built, or planned, in several countries including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya.

Shallow deposit close to port for exporting

Colluli will produce SOP, which typically sells for between two and three times the price for muriate of potash (MOP).

SOP is a premium fertiliser product that, unlike MOP, does not contain chloride and is therefore suitable for crops such as tobacco, potatoes, beans, strawberries and citrus fruits.

Being chloride-free, SOP can be used on all plants; this is not the case with MOP as it does have chloride, which can kill some plants if added in excessive quantities and also destroy microorganisms, so affecting fungi and bacteria.

In addition, SOP – unlike MOP – contains sulphur, the essential micro-nutrient every plant requires. SOP provides both sulphur and potassium, whereas MOP only provides potassium with the need to add sulphur remaining.

SOP, despite being a salt, does not build up the soil’s salinity, while chloride can make ground saltier over time.

Africa’s growing population will stress food supplies

Nigeria is forecast to have 400 million people 30 years from now and will likely by then overtake the United States as the third most populous country — its present population being about 200 million.

Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is growing faster than South Asia’s (about 2.7% per annum). In the next 30 years, it is anticipated to increase from the present 1.2 billion to 2.4 billion — yet even now, it suffers from recurrent food shortages.

That’s an increase every two years of people, with that increased number being equivalent to the population of France.

But, food is a problem: a fertiliser conference 10 years ago heard at that time that 27% of Africa’s people were chronically undernourished, with experts blaming very limited use of fertiliser.

#LiteracyDay
Eritrea has an adult literacy rate of 77% ... one of the best in the region.
(Source: World Bank)

Eritrea has made tremendous progress in improving youth and adult literacy, largely through prioritizing and devoting great attention to education and literacy.
Even more impressive is Eritrea’s Youth Literacy rate, which is 92%, and that's not only the highest in the region but also higher than the continental or global average.
