US-Ethio relations. Back to square one !

Post by Aurorae » 28 Aug 2020, 09:49

Back in the 1970's, when former president of the US, Jimmy Carter cancelled the sale of weapons to Mengistu led Ethiopian government, Mengistu jumped to the arms of the Soviet Union. Fast forward to the ending summer of 2020, Sec. State of the U.S. comes to Sudan for working visit, Dr. Abbiy Ahmed flies to Sudan, hoping to meet Pompeo, Pompeo delivers the bad news, Abbiy least expected. The US officially takes the Egyptian side over the water dispute between Ethiopia and Egypt. US withholds the usual annual aid to Ethiopia over the disagreement on the water dispute. What is Abbiy going to do, appeal . I don't believe it is just the water dispute, that is driving the issue. It is more likely, Abbiy's conducts of Ethiopian recent political upheaval that is shaping the policy toward Ethiopia. Abbiy had it easy, all he had to do was, play President Kennedy, and there you have it, he would have gone down to history as the best leader of Ethiopia. At least, on the surface, he looks like an ambitious dictator rather. Perhaps, he likes to have the kind of power Isayas has over Eritrea. But, Eritrea is not Ethiopia, and more importantly, Abbiy is not Isayas. Isayas is one of a kind. He thinks power security 24/7 over fifty years like a psychopath. That is a rare trait very few people had shown in history. Ethiopia is a jungle. At least, it is now. The ethnic politics is a power keg. If Abbiy dares to mess with it, I doubt he will succeed. He should embrace his lovable puppy bear like personality and hug his loving pentacostal wife in public along with the children and be just that peaceful prime minister and see where that takes him. Ethnic politics is here to stay. Egypt problem, that is a homework the frog gave Ethiopia for the next decades to solve.

Yeah, looks like Abichu is in trouble with Uncle Sam. Issu's mediation between Alsisi and Abichu was not successful.

Spot on analysis as usual, Aurorae. 8) 8) 8)
