Menelik's victory at the Battle of Adwa has changed the course of world history: it stopped colonialism all over the world. The European powers were shocked and feared that Ethiopia's Menelik could challenge them by invading Europe as some of the war leaders in Menelik's army stated.
We should find the balance between Menelik's role as anti-colonial force and his internal policies in Ethiopia which were based on control under one central leadership, which was necessary. There are some ethnic groups killed and lands taken, but Menelik's victory at Adwa has given freedom to billions of people all over the world: China, India, Malaysia, Indochina, Africa, Middle East etc were suffering under the brutal rule of European colonialism. Menelik historically announced the end of colonialism for all peoples of the world by defeating Italy in 1896 in Adwa, North Ethiopia.
