Why did Egypt oppose Eritrean independence but supported -to some extent- pre independence war? Because Egypt would like to see continuous war b/n Ethiopia & Eritrean & Civil war between Ethiopian various forces, so Ethiopia doesn't have the economic capacity to build dams on Abay!

IMO, If Ethiopia completed the dam then the episode is over and egypt's interference in Eritrean and Ethiopian affairs will be greatly reduced. Egypt will focus on THE Redsea and gulf of Aden to prevent the domination of Turkey, Qatar and others in the area...

Egypt had to swallow the bitter pill of reality in 1991 & 1993 after we won our independence militarily, diplomatically, legally & politically. Egypt, had to recognize Eritrea! Pres Mubarak visited Eritrea on May 25, 1993. In an unfortunate concidence, Boutros G became UNSG in 1992

Sadly, the Palestinians and the Vatican were not on board either. If history is our guide, all those nations who betrayed & backstabbed #
Eritrea are having a difficult time of their own now.
