Ras Wolde Mikael was the son of Dejazmatch Solomon of Hamasien, who ruled the Tigrigna speaking Christian districts of Hamasien, Akele Guzay, and Seraye in Medre Bahr (modern day Eritrea) during the era of Tewodros (1855-1868). Dejazmatch Solomon's loyalty to Emperor Tewodros angered and embittered his successor Emperor Yohannes, who was Tewodros's sworn enemy. After his death, his son Woldemikael succeeded him and his feud with Yohannes and the Tigrayan nobility continued.
