President Erdogan has said that Turkey will start oil exploration in Somali waters at Mogadishu’s invitation in a new sign of Ankara’s drive for influence beyond its own borders.
Mr Erdogan made the comments on Monday night as he flew back from Berlin, where he had been attending a conference on the crisis in Libya. Turkey has increased its support for the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) in recent months, sending armed drones, military advisers and Syrian rebels aligned to Ankara to Tripoli. Turkey has also signed a maritime memorandum with the GNA in Libya, marking out a gas-rich section of the eastern Mediterranean as Turkish sovereign territory, to the dismay of other countries in the region.
